Sami and Laurence were part of the 11-strong New Zealand Junior Track Cycling team at the UCI Junior World Track Champs in Germany in August. This year’s competition hosted 350 riders from 40 nations.
Sami, in her second year at the competition, was again part of the women’s team pursuit that placed second behind defending champions Italy, by a mere 7/1000s of a second. The team set a New Zealand record time of 4:27.784. Sami also competed in the women’s individual omnium event where she placed 16th overall.
Laurence, competing at the event as a first-year junior, returned home with two rainbow jerseys out of the men’s individual omnium, and the madison (with teammate Kiaan Watts (Taupo)).
Overall, the New Zealand team, coached by Tim Carswell and Myron Simpson, won a total of four medals – three gold and 1 silver – an outstanding achievement.
Gold: Laurence Pithie (omnium); Laurence Pithie and Kiaan Watts (madison); Ally Wollaston (2000m individual pursuit)
Silver: Women’s team pursuit.
