Propelling Canterbury Track Cycling For 50 Years

Denton Park Velodrome

Track cycling in Canterbury really came to the fore in 1974 when Christchurch hosted the Commonwealth Games. In preparation for this, QEII Stadium was built, along with the Denton Park Velodrome.

Surviving the 2011 earthquake, unlike the Stadium, the Velodrome continues to be put to good use today as home base for the Canterbury Track Cycling Club. In fact, some of the marshals during the time of the Commonwealth Games are still manning their posts.

CTC Patron, Bruce Dawe, was assistant race controller during the 1974 Games. The Games led to increased participation in the sport, bringing forth new talent that Bruce is just as enthusiastic about today.
